Since the beginning of mankind martial arts has been practiced in one form or another. It has developed and evolved throughout history and is unique to every country. Our style of Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art dating back many hundreds of years and has a rich and colorful history. Through various periods in history when weapons were outlawed, it was only by using their hands and feet that people could defend themselves and their family. These early martial artists studied animals in their quest to improve their skills. From this study, they saw the strength, speed and agility that the animals had. Many of our ancient and traditional forms are named and created from the movements of animals. The Art of Tang Soo Do is not limited just to empty hand fighting, but incorporates self defense and the use of a variety of weapons. The use of weapons arose from when Japanese occupiers of Okinawa banned the possession of bladed weapons. the martial arts weapons arose out of a need for practical self defense and were often based on utilizing simple farming tools. With time, some of these tools were modified quite significantly into the weapons that we know today. Phoenix Productions performs demonstrations which incorporates some of the Tang Soo Do history combined with using modern theatrical practices such as Masks and Stage Fighting. |
